About Stephanie
I have a lifelong love of math, which led me to a mechanical engineering degree from the University of Pittsburgh. In addition to my degree, I have worked as a high school math teacher and tutored as a volunteer. I started tutoring as soon as I retired so I can spend my time focusing on my passion. As a mom of 2 boys, I can relate to the demands and schedules of busy high school students. I do my best to accomodate students needs and schedules.
My focus is on advanced high school math. As an engineer, I focus on both concepts and problem solving techniques. As math gets more advanced, it is not always straightforward and requires structured problem solving in addition to the formulas and concepts.
Even though I am a mother of two boys, i find that I relate well to girls who struggle with confidence in math. I hope that I can serve as an inspiration to help them find success in mathematics.
I have a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh. I have also recently refreshed College Algebra, Calculus I and Calculus II as a local community college.
I have worked as a high school math teacher, and have done volunteer tutoring prior to starting my business.

I typically ask the student to send me anything they have that is giving them trouble. Copies of worksheets, tests, etc. I can look at how they have worked problems and get a sense of where they need help. There are often times that an underlying foundational problem exists. For example, one can't solve a trig identity or a calculus problem without good algebra skills. Since math builds on concepts, I have to take an approach where I am helping with the current topic, but find ways to build the foundational skills as well. That could mean additional worksheets that I ask the student to complete or taking a little time out of each hour to focus on skills that they should have learned in a previous class that will help them move forward.
Once I understand where the student needs help, I like to take their pre work and solve the problems ahead of time. I am able to prep for a session and use the time more efficiently. I have found that my most successful tutoring relationships are based on ongoing communication. Students email me their worksheets and class information ahead of time regularly and get to the point where they tell me what they need to get out of each tutoring session.
