About Jill

I am always happy to help! Even if the student doesn't understand, I am willing to look for another way to teach that will help them more. It is not always the student's fault that they don't understand. Most of the time it is the teacher's fault for not explaining the subject and problem correctly and thoroughly.

I enjoy seeing the progress that is made through the help I am able to give. I helped a fifth grader with her multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction facts over the school year. She couldn't get past her 4's. We worked with her and worked with her and eventually we figured out the problem. She needed more confidence in herself and she needed to feel that the teacher had confidence in her as well. When I left her class two months later, she had passed up to her 7's in each part. I was so proud of her!

I worked at a preschool over my first school year. While preschool seemed more like something I would do as a hobby, teaching or helping students with their math or English homework is something I have done since high school. When I started in on my major, I really enjoyed working with students in teaching their highest potential. While the tutor may not be able to help them do that, working with the teacher to help them would help.

I have worked as a tutor at a high school, focusing mainly on English, math, and social studies. I am also currently getting a bachelors degree in elementary education. I will graduate in Spring 2021. I have worked at a daycare that taught up through kindergarten during the school year and third grade in the summer.

About the lesson

Ask what they think they need help with, then have them work through several problems to see the process they use.

I have worked with students from all kinds of backgrounds, most of them being from low economic families. I have also worked with students who are homeless or English Language Learners. I speak a little Spanish but not enough to teach in the language. I have also worked with students who are needing more intensive help in school, however I will say that it is more effective to teach them in person rather than over video chat.

I would tell them to look for a teacher who is open and willing to help. I would also say that asking for help outside their specifications would help. Most tutors may enjoy working in another subject even if they may not be as prepared to help in that area.

I love going to basketball games. I haven't gone to as many as I would like, but I try to watch them on tv as much as a can.
