About Sylvia

I'm from the Austin area and plan on going to medical school in the near future. I recieved a Masters of Science in biomedical sciences from UNT health sciences center in 2020 and a BA in Psychology from Rice University in 2016. Between these two degrees I taught 6th Grade math for 3 years through Teach for America at a college Prep focused charter school in Houston Texas where I received a 2019 Math teachers award. I am passionate about working with Kids and have experiencing tutoring middle school to college age students in basic math, Algebra, biology, psychology, chemistry, biochemistry, test prep and test taking strategies.

I place heavy focus on growth mindsets and want my students to understand that if they dont undersatnd something one moment, they can keep working to understand the concept in the future. When Students internalize that anything is doable with the appropriate effort their growth is unlimited. I love being able to walk with students on that journey towards achievement!

I am a texas certified teacher in 4th-8th grade made and taught 6th grade for 3 years in Houston. Before this I served as a peer tutor while studying at Rice University.

About the lesson

I like to strat by getting to know the student and their strengths as well as areas for growth. I like to teach using strategies that the student is learning at school where possible, but also have my own strategies for math and science concepts if the stategies your student's teacher uses are not working.

Details

I charge $30 per hour of tutoring for basic subjects like math and english K-12. For more specialized subjects like biology, chemistry, biochemistry, psychology, and test prep I charge $40 per hour. Depending on your family situation, I am more than happy to negotiate prices within reason. I beleive every child should be able to reach the educational help they need. Full hour incriments are preffered.
