About Christina
I have been tutoring math since I was a sophomore in high school as a member of Math Honor Society, through four years of University while majoring in Math, Economics, and Spanish, and have begun again after a brief illness in 2019 and 2020. I thoroughly enjoy tutoring upper level maths and encouraging a love for STEM classes; I am proud to be a woman in mathematics and pass on my love for numbers. When I began tutoring in high school I helped elementary age children and middle schoolers. I moved on to tutoring calculus (my favorite subject) in junior year and throughout college at Transylvania University. My expertise include: Calculus I, II, and III, Statistics, ACT math, and Linear Algebra. I maintained a 3.4 GPA throughout college, graduated in 2020 with three degrees (math, economics, and Spanish) and came to appreciate a Liberal Arts experience. My final ACT score was a 33 regular and 34 Super score with a 36 in math.
I began teaching in high school during my sophomore year after becoming a member of Math Honor Society. I rapidly realized how much I loved tutoring and wanted to help more students. What a lot of people need is something explained in a slightly different way to click with their brain type. Sometimes a group teaching situation is not beneficial to your learning style.
I have received a BA in math upon taking several upper level classes with a 3.4 GPA.

Upon meeting with a new student I ask for all past tests in the subject (I can communite with the teacher if needed), a syllabus, the textbook that is being utilized, and a reasoning for why the student believes they need help. I like the first meeting to be a plan for the most part and a brief 'get to know you' so I can assess how I think the student can best be helped. I also like to know what their expectations are after getting help and to know that they are committed to doing the work that I assign.
High school and college students looking to improve their grades. I have worked with students with ADHD, but that is the extent of my work with students with disabilities.
I would recommend that a student looking for supplemental assistance first reach out to their teacher/professor to let them know that they are struggling and are actively participating in their education. Sometimes all a teacher needs to know is that you are trying. Next I would attempt to identify how I learn best and try to identify exactly where my misunderstanding was coming from during class. Then look for a tutor that you think can fill the gaps. Finally, realize that you are not stupid. You are never stupid for not doing well in a system that has been designed to be uninclusive. Asking for help is the smartest thing you can do.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
There are a variety of questions you can ask your teacher before coming to a tutor. If you are uncomfortable around your teacher, consider going to administration. If that is not an option, attempt to be professional and treat the teacher as a collegue from whom you need documents (aka your previous tests). Consider asking teachers:
1. Can you go over this test with me after school where I can ask questions without feeling embarrased?
2. Can you tell what material from the text I need to review?
3. Do you have any extra *free* materials online?
4. Do you have any extra practice problems I can work on?

Details
I pre-schedules lessons for at maximum an hour, with a set number of sessions per week. These sessions I generally charge between $40 and $60 dependent on the number of sessions and the expectations of the student. For last minute study sessions I charge $80.
