About Sophie

About me:

I am currently in my first semester of an MS program in Applied Statistics at NYU.

I graduated magna cum laude from Colgate University (2013) with a BA in Math and German.

I have spent the past four years working as a high school and middle school math teacher at The Field School in Washington DC. During those four years, I taught Statistics (1 year), Geometry (3 years), Algebra I (2 years), and Pre-Calculus (1 year). I also tutored Algebra II during the summer.

Because of my prior classroom experience, I have a lot of materials prepared to help students -- and I also have a good sense of what topics are covered in a typical middle/high school curriculum.

Although I'm excited to be back in school, I miss working with students and am hoping to continue teaching through tutoring! When I was in high school, I struggled to feel confident in math classrooms, so I understand what it's like to be frustrated and intimidated by math. Thanks to my amazing college professors, I fell in love with the subject and my hope is to help other students get there earlier in their math careers.

I did not enjoy high school math but learned to love the subject later in life. After majoring in math in college and working at a Biostatistical consulting firm for a year, I decided I was tired of sitting in front of a computer screen all day and I wanted to help students have a better math experience than I did.

I was a classroom math teacher for the past four years and have been tutoring students in math since freshman year of college.

About the lesson

Before making any plans for long term tutoring, I generally like to set up a 30 minute meeting with the student to get a better understanding of what they need help with, what texts/resources their teacher is already using, and to make sure that I am a good fit with the student's needs. After that, if all parties agree that my services would be helpful, we can set up tutoring sessions of any duration/frequency that makes sense.

I have worked with a huge range of students in the past, but primarily grades 7-12 in courses ranging from Pre-Algebra through Pre-Calculus.

Details

For students who are nearby or who are willing to come meet me near my apartment, I charge $65 per hour. For students who I have to travel to, I charge ~$5-$20 additional, depending on cost and time to travel to the student.
