About Via

By focusing on the student, rather than the subject, I am better able to gauge what it is that may potentially prevent my students from achieving the results they want. Sometimes this transcends the subject itself, and is more closely linked to study habits and traits. I focus on improving my students' learning and setting them up for long-term succes, rather than just focusing on getting them a higher grade in the short term (but getting higher grades IS still a main objective).

My favorite part about tutoring is the satisifcation students feel when they finally understand something they thought was beyond them.

I actually started tutoring when I was a TA for a college Biology course. Some of the students needed additional 1-on-1 tutoring outside of class, and I discovered that not only did I feel like I was able to cater to their learning better, but that I truly loved teaching! I have been tutoring on-and-off since then, since I have been busy with my own educational endeavors. But now that I have some more time, I am happy to dedicate it to students in need of help!

I have a Master's in Biomedical Science from an Illinois medical school (I can disclose upon request) and a Bachelor's degree in Human Biology with a minor in Mathematics.

About the lesson

I like to first get a general understanding on what my students are struggling with. Most of the time, I've seen that it goes beyond just the subject and has a lot to do with study habits and confidence levels. I try my best to encourage and uplift my students, while still drilling in the importance of adhereing to good study habits that will yield the desired results.

I was diagnosed with ADHD during the latter years of my education. Because of this, school used to be very difficult for me, and it wasn't until after my diagnosis that I learned how to study and get the results I'd always dreamed of getting. I enjoy working with students who struggle with finding the motivation or feel daunted by the material they're learning, because I believe it's all the more satisifying when they finally gain the tools they need to succeed.
