About Lois

I am a licensed teacher. I have a Bachelors of Science in Elementary Education (K-6) with a concentration in Mild Interventions (K-12). I began teaching in 2005 and am entering my 15th year in special education. I LOVE children! I have 4 children of my own. I wanted to be a teacher ever since middle school when my handicapped cousin was born. I loved working with him and being around him; it just came naturally to me. I work with students in the general education setting. Students have IEP's, as well as some who do not. I have co-taught in the math classroom since I began teaching 15 years ago. I love math and I've been re-teaching it for so long that I can help students understand concepts easier.

I love working with students and watching them feel success, but also how to work through those frustrating times and utilize resources to find the answers they need.

I have taught special education with specializing in high school math subjects for the past 15 years. With special education, I often have to pull students to reteach the content to them so that they can understand it better.

I like to get to know the student and his/her learning styles. Some students need more visual ways to learn math. I try different styles to help the student learn. Ideally, the student would learn techniques to help him/her to become more independent as well.

Pick someone who will meet your individual learning needs; someone that can help you figure out a way for you to figure out answers to your questions on your own.

I was nominated by a parent for the school's Somebody Extra Special Award. She never thought her son would be in a traditional high school setting but I was able to help mainstream him into that setting and he will graduate a year early!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should be as specific as they can when asking questions. Don't just say "I don't know how to do this." Instead, say "I get stuck on this step of the problem every time," or something more specific. If you are generic like the first question, teachers don't know where to fix your mistakes. The key to math is learning where you make your mistakes so that you can fix them!

I generally charge $50 per hour and recommend 1-2 sessions per week. However, I will be open to negotiation if that is needed.
