About Daryl

In 1995 when I first began tutoring mathematics to college students, I was a poor graduate student and needed the money to make ends meet. Little did I realize the rush of joy I would feel when the tutees' mental blocks were removed and they "got it." To see the smile spread over a previously worried and frustrated face and see the lights come on was very rewarding for me.

I learned very quickly that math tutees are not stupid, but there is typically a mental block or two that needs to be dislodged so that things make sense again.

That is how I help you achieve your goals, by guiding you through your own mental processes and showing where they are inconsistent. Once you see the inconstitency, you can easily correct it yourself, so that the subject is no longer mysterious, but makes perfect sense to you. In this way you gain confidence, because you realize it was just a mental block -- you are not "dumb" or "challenged."

Before I began tutoring I was a school teacher (teaching most of the high school science classes for a private school) for a few years, then spent several years in graduate school as a research assistant. In 1996 I earned a Masters degree in mathematics followed by a second Masters degree in 1997 in ecology. I enjoyed tutoring so much that I wanted a job that was as much like tutoring as possible, and found a job on a helpdesk working for a software company, where again I found great pleasure in removing mental blockages as call center managers who were trying to use the software called in. I worked both on the helpdesk and also went onsite to train the managers, but regardless, I used the same technique of removing mental blocks, and enjoyed my job tremendously.

In 2021, after working for this same software company for over 20 years, I was laid off, and am beginning to go back to my old love of academic tutoring.

My initial teaching experience was as a teenager. I taught piano to younger children, including my younger brother.

Teaching and tutoring, principally at the high school and collegiate levels, but also elementary and middle school.

About the lesson

Once you contact me, I will want to know your name and a little bit about you, as well as the general topic you would like to be tutored on. From there, we will want to set a date, time, and duration for the tutoring session. If possible, I would like to obtain a copy of the material (usually the textbook chapter) so that I can be well prepared for our session.

Age-wise, most of my students have been high school or college students, and when working on the helpdesk with managers, I was of course working with adults. I have worked with middle school and elementary school students as well.

Skill-wise, I have taught AP botany and Advanced General Biology classes, as well as Anatomy to senior pre-med students who would soon be going to medical school. I have also had experience working with mentally handicapped high school students as a teaching assistant in the public schools.

It is human to care about others, so you should expect that whatever teacher you consider will be caring, at some level.

There are, however, two very nasty tendencies that tend to mask the caring attitude, which are particularly tempting to teachers.

The first tendency is that of professionalism. Teachers naturally want to appear professional, and that professionalism can be comforting to the student, because if signals that the teacher knows what he or she is doing. But a truly caring teacher will be willing to appear vulnerable and even foolish if it helps the student.

The second tendency that masks the caring attitude is simply pride. As teachers, it is easy to think that we are knowledgable and therefore privileged in some way. A prideful teacher will tend to talk down to the student rather than wading through the subject together with the student. Ideally, the teacher should want to see the subject through the eyes of that student, which then allows the teacher to correct any misunderstandings.

My advice, then, is to look for a teacher that cares, and avoid teachers that appear to be overly prideful or stuck on appearing professional at the expense of caring about the needs of the student.

This past year, one of the managers (customers) I worked with on the help desk was retiring, and mentioned to my manager that for the last 15 years she had had my number on speed dial. I very much enjoyed working with her, and was sorry that she would no longer be calling me.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
One thing you don't want is for the teacher to jump to conclusions about the problem you're facing. It is good to provide as much background and context as you can, so the teacher will be properly oriented to your situation, and appreciate the struggle you are going through.
