About Karas
I am someone who likes people and enjoys helping them improve and reach their goals.
Growing up, I got very good grades and found that I was able to learn things well and then in turn explain them to those around me. I enjoyed doing this, and so I have pursued a career as a teacher and tutor!
I received my bachelor's in Elementary Education in 2015, and have professional training for K-8th grades, in Reading, Writing, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Bible. I taught in Northern Manhattan for 3 years before resigning to tutor and stay home with my child.
Through my teaching experience, I have learned how to assess skill level, design lesson plans, and evaluate growth, making adjustments as needed. In addition to teaching, I have also tutored students from K-12th and even adults working on getting their GED. I can teach most any topic that I've been taught or have studied. I did very well in high school, graduating valedictorian and with a 4.0. I got a 2240 on the SAT and held a 3.97 GPA in college.
I am able to help with homework, plan and help with test prep up to college level, and design lessons.
I live in Fair Lawn, NJ, and normally am willing to travel to students' homes, but due to the current pandemic I am focusing on tutoring online.
I can provide references from those I have worked with in the past.
I look forward to working with and getting to know new students!
I love meeting new people, helping them get better and feel better about their progress, and reaching their God-given potential!
Since I learned things easily growing up, I ended up "teaching" those around me -- classmates who were struggling, students in younger grades who needed help, etc.
I enjoyed helping others and since what I was learning made sense to me, I wanted to find ways to help it make sense to others. As I grew older, I saw what an impact certain teachers had on my life and knew that it would be a privilege to have that same impact on others, so I chose to study to be a teacher in college.
I have been tutoring since middle school when I joined a volunteer Afterschool Tutoring Program in Inwood, a neighborhood in Northern Manhattan.
I have my bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, Illinois.
I taught for 3 years at Manhattan Christian Academy and during that time attended professional development sessions and several conferences, covering topics such as student engagement, assessment, planning based on desired end results, and more.

We would meet each other and get to know one another a bit. I like to find out students' learning preferences, what they like and dislike, what material they are working on, if they have any goals, and where they are at with that material. Often this involves a pre-assessment so that we know what standards or topics we need to improve on. This allows me to build the sessions around student needs and goals.
I grew up in the Bronx and now live in NJ. I have worked with students from a variety of backgrounds and ages, but most have come from the inner-city and from lower-income families. Though many have been below grade level or struggling, including English Language Learners, I have also worked with students who excel, specifically in Math and Science. As a teacher I had wide range in my classroom. I have worked with students with special education needs and those who qualified for Math Olympics competitions.
Try to identify what it is you want to improve in and ask your potential tutor if and how they can help you with your goal!
Nowadays my events are fairly small scale, but I enjoy hanging out with my 2 year old and watching her learn! Our most recent adventure was tracing our bodies on the sidewalk in front of our house and drawing letters and animals, then jumping on them when I called out the letter or animal. I'm fond of this because I got to see my girl smiling, laughing, and learning. :)
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What have my favorite teachers been like?
What are my favorite subjects or parts of school?
What do I NOT like about this topic or material?
What do I find hard about learning this?
How much time can I commit to practicing, including outside of a tutoring session?

Karas is wonderful person with a big heart and wonderful teacher. She has been tutoring my 13 years old daughter for last 2 years and she cares for her like its her own child. My daughter was bullied in school before and Karas helped to bust confidence in her and grades went up. Karas also tutor me to get my high school diploma and I am on collage now. Karas is amazing tutor, very knowledgeable, we absolutely love her.
Karas, has helped me my whole life. She knows how to teach with a lot of patience.
