About Katie

As the daughter of a high school math teacher, I have experienced first hand how important it is to get excited about the material so it becomes more interesting to learn about. It is one thing to solve for the answer, another to understand the reasoning of what got us there. Businesses are not going to pay you down the line for an answer. They want you to be able to explain what you did and be able to prove what you did is logical. Math and chemistry implement that continuously.

During the last four years as a student at Concordia University St Paul, I tutored students most often in chemistry, statistics, and calculus along with a mix of elementary math, algebra and other general classes. In addition, I have helped students with note-taking strategies and successful study habits. In addition, this past year I was a teacher's assistant for a general chemistry class where I taught curriculum and answered questions once a week.

As a student, I graduated summa cum laude with honors in math. I was also on the board for both math and science clubs. All this was done while being a NCAA Division II student-athlete.

I have a passion for learning, especially math and chemistry, and love to pass it on to others!

I enjoy working through the "why" rather than just chugging out work to get an answer. The why is what is going to be applicable in life, beyond a math or science class.

I love to see my students get more confident in their skills to where they then feel independent and successful in their work.

I graduated from CSP in May 2020 and spent my four years tutoring through the school along with numerous friends and teammates. I have also tutored my neighbor in his college calculus class.

When working with a new student, I like to ask them where they feel they're struggling. This is even more helpful with specific examples and situations. From there we develop a game plan of how to approach the material. Sometimes it is taking it a lesson at a time. Others it is working on the basics and showing how that applies to the current work. Or it is bringing past lessons together to understand how it all is related. Whichever the approach, it is flexible to fit the student's needs.

I have worked with mostly college students. It has ranged from those pretty confident in the material just needing some extra practice and support to students nearly failing the class. I also have worked with high school students with their math homework. These students are typically struggling to grasp the material, but want to learn.

When looking for a teacher, make sure it is someone who can explain the material to you. There is a clear explanation on how you arrived at the answer, not simply "you do this because it's how it works". The beauty of math and science is that everything has a reason why and there is logic behind the road to get to the answer.
Make sure you fully grasp the material, not just to get an answer. This means having extra problems to practice, being able to reproduce problems you have done without looking at your work. To be sure you know the material, you should be able to teach your teacher and explain you reasoning to the problems you do.
