About Monica

I have always wanted to teach. After seeing the world while serving in the Navy, I came back to teach art, and there I stayed for 13 years. While pursuing my teaching credentials, I realized that we ALL have particular strengths and weaknesses in learning, and thought learning these strategies from the special education point of view would only help my teaching process. Since then, I have spent 10 years teaching Special Education.

I have been teaching for 23 years now and love it! I have a BS in Graphic Design and fine arts, and a Master's Degree in Special Education. I also have dual credentials in Special Education for mild/mod & mod/severe needs including ELL, autism and students with emotional disturbances. I also speak Japanese and American Sign Language (ASL).

Relationships are very important to my process. 😃 I like talking to the parents of a minor to understand what is needed. Learning the strategies used in class that work so I can reinforce their learning skills, and learning the concerns that are needing to be addressed are critical to know in the beginning. And I make every effort to have honest conversations with my student(s) and respect their feelings & fears as we work past them.

* PreK-8th grade art

* high school SPED resource and students with emotional disturbances

 * middle school SPED special day class

 * elementary K-5 SPED resource, specific learning disabilities (online)

 * high school SPED autism (online)

* high school SPED resource and credit deficient seniors

 I have also taught many small-group classes to adults depending on their specific needs: beginning ASL, Japanese, taking the ASVAB for military entrance, ELL English.

The advice I would give ANY student, kindergarten or adult:

"You might not like it, or you might think it's hard..... but give it a try. You CAN do it, and it could even be fun if you give it a try! Surprise yourself and make yourself proud that you DID IT!!" 🤩

My high school students were having a really emotional time dealing with the pandemic, wearing masks, and staying home sick for extended amounts of time when testing positive. These emotions and anxieties were affecting their performance in class and they were losing focus. 😞 In English class, we took 2 days to breathe and create inspirational Post-it notes to hang on the class window for classmates and passer-bys to remove and keep for themselves. Over the months that the decorative squares disappeared, I heard some students say that they gave it to their mom, and one gave it to their girlfriend. I even saw a staff member take a Post-it. ☺️ Sharing these observations with my classes lifted up their spirits and got the class back on track.... I was so proud of them!!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I think ANY QUESTION a student has is important to ask....
