About Madelyn
I have a Bachelor's degree in Human Nutrition from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and graduated in the top 3% of my class (Bronze Tablet recipient). I also worked in a food science lab on campus. Plus, I know work as a professional actress and producer with an arts education company. My creative abilities combined with my extensive science background allow me to teach in an engaging, personalized way. Not everyone learns the same, and I am passionate about finding new ways to convey information and tutor in a manner that best suits the student, as opposed to expecting them to conform to the rigors of an impersonal lesson plan. My empathy and ability to connect means that I get to know my students and figure out how they best consume knowledge, and I specialize in breaking down complicated scientific concepts. I encourage thorough understanding of a topic as opposed to memorization and/or cramming.
I am passionate about working with students to engage them in academic subjects and encourage them to find their own spin/grasp of knowledge. Everyone has a unique mind and way of processing, and discovering that to empower the student is one of the most satisfying and fulfilling aspects of tutoring. I also, admittedly, am a science nerd. From biology to chemistry to physiology and diagnostics, these subjects are inifinitely fascinating to me. So, finding new and interesting ways to explain them is a personal hobby that also furthers my understanding. As the student learns, so do I.
I began tutoring a child with special physical needs when I was 14, which inspired my passion for finding unqiue, personalized lesson plans to teach.
I was hired by Teach for American to teach science to middle and high schoolers following college graudation, though I ultimately decided to decline that opportunity to pursue a career in NYC instead.
Bachelor's in Human Nutrition from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. I also was a research assistant in a food lab, focusing on biochemistry and food insecurity. This research eventually led me to conducting research in Honduras following graudation.
I also work with an arts education company, meaning I have access to a series of learning exercises and curriculums that utilize a more creative and empathetic approach to teaching and understanding.

I get to know the student and learn about their interests and hobbies. I ask them some basic questions to ascertain their learning preferences (visual, applied, etc). I then ask them about their educational goals, and what they feel may be preventing them from attaining these goals. From there, we can develop a series of small action steps, often using a creative personalized approach that they know is designed just for them.
