About Sarah

Math and physics can be fun and exciting when students understand how they work! One of the major reasons that students have an aversion to math-related subjects is because they do not see the "why" or the "how" behind the principles. By focusing on explaining theorems and concepts, I prioritize a foundational understanding that allows students to reason through problems instead of memorizing how to reach an answer.

I have a background in college physics and have a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Providence College. In both subject areas, I earned a 4.0 GPA. I have tutored previously in calculus and college physics, and I am known for creating visual examples to explain abstract concepts.

I started tutoring at the tutoring center on my college campus. I was able to develop a very close relationship with one of my tutees, which allowed me to adapt to his learning style and find creative, visual ways for him to understand complex physics concepts.

I have taken Physics I and Physics II at the college level, earning A's in both classes. I also have a bachelor's degree in mathematics, where I took classes such as Calculus I, Calculus II, Calculus III, Linear Algebra, Abstract Algebra, and Real Analysis. My overall GPA in mathematics is 4.0. I worked as a tutor in physics and calculus at Providence College, and I also worked as a mathematics note-taker for one of my math classes.

About the lesson

I have the student explain what they are studying in class, where the student is having trouble, and why the student might think they are having trouble. I would ask detailed questions about how the student engages in class and what the student's notes look like. I would then try to find gaps in the student's notes, provide concrete examples or definitions, and try to find a learning method that would be most useful to the student.

I have primarily worked with college students. One of the students I have previously tutored had a learning accommodation.

I would advice students to look for a teacher that emphasizes understanding concepts and theorems over learning how to simply find an answer. When I first had a teacher that was able to help me understand how and why math theorems were true, I was able to reason through applying them and using them to solve problems. For math and physics, being able to understand key concepts and theorems is necessary for understanding how to apply them to solve problems.

I visited my college for our Homecoming Weekend and I was able to see some of my friends from the Club Ultimate Frisbee team. I love playing ultimate frisbee and I miss my teammates, especially because so much of our time was interrupted by the pandemic. The weather was beautiful, the grass was green, and we had a fantastic time catching up and tossing with each other.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should ask themselves why they are having trouble understanding a certain concept or solving a certain type of problem. In doing so, they can start to identify areas of weakness, which can help the teacher guide the lesson. Students should also think about how they solve problems. If they have trouble answering that question, then the teacher can find direct ways of addressing areas of misunderstanding.
