About Sabrina

I am a student a UAB studying to become an early education teacher. I am very passionate about finding the best way to teach any student. As someone with a brother who has ADHD I understand that some children may need different teaching methods than others, and I love working with each and every students to find the best way that works for them.

I love math and the theory that goes behind teaching. Helping someone through a subject that they find difficult is very fullfilling and the way it feels seeing every thing click into place for student is always awesome.

I fell in love with teaching when my younger brother began to fall behind in math because no teacher wanted to take the time to see mathematics the way he perceived it. Being a child with ADHD and a learning disability, it was easy for him to be left behind in class. What started as me just helping him study for a math test turned into an every day activity that carried on long after I moved out. I learned that with patience and one-on-one time catered to their learning style, any student can not just excel in math, but fall in love with it the way I did.

While having experience tutoring children with learning disabilities, friends throughout my high school career, and scholastic peers, I also am a Mathematics major at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, having already completed three semesters including two math courses designed specifically for future teachers.

About the lesson

Everyone is taught the standard way of problem-solving, but I am interested in finding and fine-tuning the processes that are most effective for each individual student. Math is known for having one solid answer, but many different ways to retrieve it. Let’s find yours.

I have worked with a wide range of students from seven-year-old boys with ADHD all the way to twenty-four year old art students trying desperately to pass their required math course!

I have discovered that the decades of experience with math could mean that a teacher has developed their own sense of math and their own perception of problem-solving, meaning that they will likely not want to mold their own knowledge to fit a student’s growing understanding. Don’t be afraid to partner with the younger tutoring generation. We tend to have more patience with people that don’t understand, more experience with the new teaching and learning methods, as well as the desire to learn more along with our students.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Don’t just tell us you’re “bad” at math. Tell us when you stopped being interested in the subject and when you started to label it as hard. That turning point in your academic career (no matter how early or late) is crucial to understanding what we can do to help you succeed as well as what we can do better as a teacher in general.

I am currently charging $50-$75 an hour. This is subject to change depending on the mathematics course and the time of day the tutoring is needed.
