I give them a set of questions to asses their current abilities. I also simply talk to them to learn the best way to teach them.
I have worked with mostly math students below 8th grade.
Find someone who think fits you best. Every teacher works differently and so does every student.
Recently, I went to a botanical garden and I was to see the different plants and animals that lived there. It was a nice long walk.
