About Faith

It's important when tutoring to make sure that it's specified to the student itself. My hope is to get to know you as the student, to figure out how you learn, and what you need better knowledge of.

Frankly, it depends on the age group:

For younger students, using educational games and activities during your sessions can turn learning into a fun and interactive experience.

For older students in high school or college, it may be more successful in incorporating technology into your lesson plans.

Also, there are many resources out there that can be used for teaching math... and is considered fun. It just all depends on the students focus, what they need to learn, and how they need to learn.

I enjoy teacher and helping students that need the help with math. But, frankly, it's more because I love math and it's always been my favorite school subject. So I see it as my job to help others with math, but to also make math seem more durable and enjoyable because let's face it: most students don't like math.

I have plenty of tutoring experience that stems out at many subjects, but my main focus and joy is from teaching mathematics. My very first tutoring experience was with my brother. He had struggled with mathematics and science classes, so I would help him with his assignments and currently preparing him for the ACT.

Then, for my senior year of high school, I had tutored English at the Appleton Bilingual Elementary School. I had taken six years of Spanish, so I felt that I was capable of teaching english to young children whose first language was Spanish.

Now I'm a current college student working on completing my general education in hopes of pursuing a nursing degree. Interestingly enough, I have completed all my required mathematics courses for general education early. This was possible by taking AP classes in high school and extra math classes over the summer.

I even took the Math Placement Test that is recommended for choosing college classes. I reached a test score at Level 5 (which is the final and most advanced level). Therefore, I have learned and have an understanding in every math subject.

I have been "teaching", not as a proffessional, since I was about 16 years old. This was possible because I knew the topics that I tutored very well and I had good connections that made this all possible. For example, I have taught a close friend the violin, my brother in math and science classes, and completed high school volunteering hours through tutoring english to students at the Appleton Billingual School.
Of course I wouldn't call myself a teacher because I haven't gotten a degree within the subjects that I have tutored in the past. However, the reason that one tutors others is because they have that natural desire to help others through what they know best; and in that case for me, I have that desire to tutor students in mathematics.

I have been in advanced math classes since middle school. Then once I graduated high school, that summer before my freshmen year of college started I had taken a summer math class. That class encompassed all math topics and concepts. Then following the class I took the math placement class and had reached a score to Level 5 (which is the most advanced level). Therefore, I had completed all my mathematical courses needed for my general education. That is why I believe I am capable of helping other students in math; and being a tutor is only possible with the knowledge for the subject and a desire to teach others.

About the lesson

I have tutored and given lessons to students from all different ages, which seems questionable to some because I'm a young college student.

In order to graduate high school it is usually required to complete volunteering hours. Therefore, my first official tutoring experience was when I taught English to elementary kids at the Appleton Billingual Elementary School. This was possible because I had taken spanish classes for six years in a row. Therefore, I was able to help young elementary students learn English, whose first language was spanish.

However, before that I had helped my brother with his math and science classes. He had struggled with those concepts; so I would help him complete his homework, but also made him complete complementary problems in order to make sure he understood the concepts. It proved to work for him and thankfully, it showed in his classes and his ACT score.

Another experience that I have was giving a few violin lessons. I have played the violin for about 10 years and is one of my favorite instruments to play. Although I didn't take it as seriously as my other opportunities (because I was teaching a friend who had prior experience with string instruments), that student still learned the violin.

I have learned within my tutoring experience that my student's wishes were to have help for their homework and teaching material they didn't understand. Frankly, I don't mind helping students with their homework, but the main focus is to make sure they understand the material and math related concepts.

However, I am not the student's teacher that assigned the homework assignment. Therefore, my goal isn't to finish the student's homework assignment during each session. My goal is to help the student solve each math problem, showing all the steps needed to solve the problem. Then having the student solve a similar problem by mimicking the steps that the student learned from the tutor.

The reason why I explain this is because I don't want the tutor completing the students homework for them without the student understanding: that's truly a disservice to the tutee.

Therefore, the main goal of tutoring is to help a tutee to become a lifelong independent learner. Mimicking the steps shown by a tutor will not help a tutee become an independent learner and will not help the tutee learn critical thinking.
