About Nancy

As a veteran teacher of English and Creative Writing, I offer my students individualized, targeted help to address any needs as they come up. Flexibility is key! I've always worked hard to give the students the skills to grow their confidence, and I always make learning fun. Whether you struggle with essay writing, literary analysis, grammar, or Creative Writing, let me help you achieve your goals. I look forward to meeting you!

I'm currently working as a Consultant for Euphony Coaching, an organization that helps high school students develop their application essays for the UC system, so I can't take on too many students at this time. Since I'm just starting out, I'm offering a free 1-hour tutoring session for the students who contacts me first!

Early on, as a teenager, I discovered the love for teaching for applying for the job of Assistant Coach for the Recreation Center's new gymnastics team. Have been loving every sort of teaching since then!

B.A. in English, MAT English, University of Iowa, UC Santa Barbara.

25 years of experience teaching in both Iowa and California: high school, Adult GED, and Antelope Valley College.

Four published articles, memoirs.

About the lesson

Getting to know them as people first, then reviewing their work, listening to their concerns, and possibly looking at past work as well, all of which helps me to develop a plan tailored to the student's needs.

Every type imaginable--High School, Middle School, and Junior College students, as well as children (when I teach skiing at my local resort). These students have sharply differing skills, interests, personalities, and temperaments. Love them all.

Make sure they have a sense of humor, that they have plenty of experience, and also are willing to dedicate enough time to do a great job for you.

My former student, Calvin, wrote me a message on Facebook saying he wanted to know how I was. I told how happy I was to hear from him--then he wrote a lovely tribute, the gist of which was "YOU had my back. To everyone else at the school, I was a number." Calvin had been homeless at the time I taught him and became a fantastic student aide. My husband and I liked to make him holiday dishes to bring to school because he had no family helping him.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Think about all the comments you've received from as many teachers possible. List the kinds of issues that you have most trouble with: comprehension, composition, creative assignments, time management issues, etc.
