About Kiarra

History can be a giant snooze fest. You learn about people you don’t know, from a time period that you definitely wouldn’t be able to understand. Well here at Kiarra’s History Korner, that all changes. How does that work? Well the way I teach history is as if we were best friends just catching up and having a conversation. This creates a dialogue that can be easily understood, no matter how far back into the time the subject may be. In doing so, it’s as if learning becomes second nature as we use modern language to piece together past events into its’ significance in present day.

Learning history this way, whether it was World History, US History, or US Government was what helped achieves A’s in class as well as the scores I wanted in AP tests. It’s what also helped me tutor my peers in my undergrad who couldn’t struggled with history.

What I enjoy about learning history is that it shows us patterns despite the different advances in society. I love being able to find patterns of certain ideaologies and behaviors that shape movements that still have an effect in present day. I love when students have that shinning moment when everything clicks, especially when it seemed impossible, all from restructuring the original information. By helping students view history with a different lens is my goal in getting students achieve that A in history class.

In highschool, I was able to achieve 4's and 5's on my history AP tests. I also tutored students in elementary and middle school kids and a few college students during my early years in college.

About the lesson

I start off by asking students to tell me the first word that comes to mind when they hear the word history and why that particular word.From there I try to understand what their past encounters have been with history and formulate patterns. I also ask what is their most favored subject to learn and why to get an understanding of how information gets processed.

I've worked with a variety of students, from elementary school all the way up to freshman year college students.

My advice would be to look for a tutor that is able to meet your learning needs. Not everyone learns material in the same way. Some students thrive on learning history straight out of a textbook while others like to be able to relate the content into modern day.
