About Adrienne
As a former assistant professor of history at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, I've spent the better part of my life in history classes and understand how fascinating it can be when it is presented well, or, how dreadful it can be when presented as an endless series of names and dates on a timeline. I'm a passionate believer that history matters, and that the study of history should be fun, relevant, and rewarding.
I'm a graduate of West Point, and have an M.A. and Ph.D. in Early American and Early Modern European History from Rutgers University. I've published a book: A Powerful Mind: the Self-Education of George Washington, and several articles published in edited volumes and by Oxford University Press. Besides teaching at West Point, I have additional experience with adult professional education as the Senior Historian at Battlefield Leadership, a leadership development company that teaches lessons in leadership using historical examples to business leaders in top corporations in the US.
I come from a family of teachers. My mother was a teacher for over 30 years and I developed an interest in teaching from her.
I've gone through extensive training in teaching as well in addition to my studies in history, so I am well versed in the best teaching practices that enable students to internalize lessons and apply them.

I first talk to the student to gain an understanding of why they feel they need a tutor and what they are hoping to get from a tutor that they would not otherwise get from their teacher or professor through additional instruction. I then work with them to build a customized roadmap for success, setting out when the major dealines are (tests, paper and/or project due dates) and then working to fill in achieveable steps to take on this roadmap in order to set the stage for achieving whatever his/her goal is (a better grade on a test, paper, or end of semester/term grade).
I've worked with middle school students, high school students, college students, and adults.
Look for a tutor that can understand what you are looking to achieve. It's not all about price - generally the lowest bidder is not interested in actually teaching. Tutoring should mean more than just side hustle income. If you get the feeling that a tutor is a) not really an expert, and/or b) is just looking to keep you on the clock to get paid, keep looking. Look for someone that is passionate about history - they make it so much more interesting.
