Many people can teach you basic chords and guitar theory, but if you're interested in becoming more than an "average" player, and aspier to be "good", or "exceptional" and learn to play like the guitar players you admire - you'll need a little more...and that's what I can offer you.

Even as a beginner, you'll get the basic essentials as well as the building blocks for the advanced techniques you'll work on later. My beginner students get to the next level of playing more quickly because from the outset, their program is geared to taking them further with the instrument.

My students get a custom program tailored for their individual goals. I use the introductory/evaluation class to develop a path which is optimium for reaching your musical destination.

For intermediate level and advanced players, there's a very small group of guitarists who have mastered the techniques and approaches that you need to get to the next level, and a smaller fraction still who can transfer these skills to other players. I consider myself fortunate, after more than 20 years of dedication to the guitar, to have become a member of that select group who can do exactly that.

Students get the benefits of my years of experience with guitar techniques, songwriting and guitar music theory and practice, as well as often overlooked teaching topics such as performing on-stage, ergonomics for efficiency and comfort, instrument maintenance and simple DIY reparis. These are essential facets of daily musician life, and there are many others which go into making better musicians.

My intermediate and advanced students also get the benefits of my extensive work in improvisation, integrated lead/rhythm technique, advanced rhythm guitar, incorporating advanced lead techniques, and musicality concepts such as "playing for the song", "ensemble vs solo performance", and "developing your signature sound". Beginner students are introduced early to my concepts of correlating musical energy to creative expressiveness, which is a key building block that will allow their playing to stand out from the crowd as they progress with their playing proficiency.

My extensive NYC music contacts also give my students access to instrument/equipment discounts at one of the major NYC music retailers, as well as opportunities to get on stage to work on their performance skills when they're ready for an audience.

The ultimate satisfaction is seeing my students reach their goal of becoming the guitar player that he/she wants to be.

Along the way, I really enjoy going through each breaktrhough with my students - seeing that "aha" moment as they understand the full impact of a moveable chord shape for the first time, or when we break down that impossible riff from their favorite rocker into its basic parts and string them together, for example. Even more satisfying is watching them execute a new technique for the first time - finally get that hammer on/pull off sequence where each note comes through clear as a bell, their first pinched harmonic, or that first unison bend...

Another aspect though of my services which I find really satisfying is when I'm asked to do a guided guitar/amp shopping field trip with a student buying his/her first insrument. Even though the student is the one taking the new gear home, I'm (almost) as happy as they are after I've helped them to find the instrument that feels like the right fit for them, best suits the style/styles of music they want to play and is the optimum value within their budget.

It's a really great feeling to get someone started on their guitar journey, knowing just how much enjoyment they're likely to get out of playing guitar over the years to come.

About the lesson

My process starts with an introductory/evaluation Lesson 1, either at my NYC studio or the student's location, whichever is more convenient for the student.

During this session, we get to the heart of what experience the student is looking to get out of playing the guitar, I'll see where they may be already on that path, and determine what tools and experiences they need to reach their goal. Next I develop a step by step lesson plan for their musical journery, and Lesson 2 we start putting that plan into action.

I focus on not only making my students better guitar players, but also on making the process enjoyable. There are tons of guitars on e-bay that ended up in the attic because someone got frustrated and gave up on guitar. My students keep learning, and they keep playing, because we make the effort to manage that balance.

The student's needs are always the paramount concern - the pace is idealized for their schedule and time constraints, and if their interests expand/playing goals change as they get more into guitar, we make adjustments to the lesson plan accordingly.

We don't believe in fitting each student into a cookie cutter program - we believe in develiping a program to fit each student's unique needs.

I was really thrilled to be selected in 2016 as the Guitar Jam Group Classes teacher at Billboard Magazine's Chord Club studio facility on New York City's Upper East Side. It was a really exciting concept, getting kids ages 5 through 12 started on learning the guitar and taking through to where they can perform their favorite Billboard hits together in the studio. It was a very fullfilling experience.
