The first thing is to establish a relaxed and positive manner of communication. During this "get to know each other" conversation, I usually ask about what music, or artists they like, and if they have any specific goals that they wish to achieve. Then it's time for me to listen to the learner play, sometimes I'll ask for certain skills or just a two or three chord rhythm, it really depends upon the individual. After that, I then have much of what I need to develop a personalized lesson plan, for the next session.
