About Michael

All lessons are tailored towards the individual. We work on what you wish to work on. 18 years experience, teaching music to people of all ages.

The people, who are willing to take a chance, and learn something new. That takes courage.

I have been showing people how to play music since I was in grade school. I started teaching full time in 2001 when I got a job at a local music store. Since that time I have taught hundreds of people.

45 years of music performance. Thousands of gigs of all types. Bass Performance Major/Jazz Studies Minor. 18 years experience of one-on-one music tutoring with people of all ages.

About the lesson

Welcome them. Help them to feel at ease and comfortable about asking questions. Ask about their musical interests. Show them something that they can take home and practice for a week. (according to their skill level. And mine.)

The age range is from 5 to 85 (so far). :) All types of students are welcome. All you need is an instrument and a desire to learn.

Find someone who is willing to teach you the things you want to learn. Not necessarily out of a book.

Once a year I held a "Student Jam" at a local venue. It was less formal than a recital, and the students could play the music that they wanted to play. It was always a fun event, and a great way for my students to meet one another.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What are my goals?

What types of music do I like?

Who are musicians that I admire?

Am I willing to spend time on music every day?

Mike is very patient with his students, he takes the time to explain the reasons behind techniques, and also teaches students about real-world use of musical skills. Advice about being on stage, playing for a crowd, or getting along with bandmates always made the way into his lessons.
