About Soren

I offer help in all levels of music training from Beginner - Collegiate Level. I have training in instrumental music education and a Master's degree in music composition.

I can offer private lessons, group study sessions, or consultations on what might be the best approach for you or your student.

I believe Music is one of the fundamental languages of our species, and helping people obtain their goals of expressing that language is a duty all musicians can appreciate.

I began teaching in my undergraduate degree-career. I was passionate about passing on my knowledge and adding anything I could to the group in an effort to when more people over to the dark-side that is being a musician. ;)

I have taught for a few marching band seasons in Mobile, AL which includes local highschools and collegiate groups. I was a T.A. for my marching band in college and taught the Front Ensemble (mallet percussion) at the university of South Alabama for three years.

About the lesson

I typically will meet with the student (or via email if they prefer) to define an objective. Once we set up an objective I let them know what I think we need to do together to achieve that goal.

If you'd like to write a great Opera, great! If you've always wanted to know how to play "More Than a Feeling" for your significant other...great! Let's find the fun way to get there!

Middle school, high schoolers, collegiate colleagues.

Find someone that feels personable. If you're comfortable with your teacher and are passionate about learning, you can find a way.

Remember that music doesn't have a 'right way' (unless you're taking your theory exam).

But if you are having fun... then you're doing it right.

I recently saw a high school drum line (that I have since retired from teaching due to my moving), and they are still incorporating my teachings in their approach to their most recent half time show.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
"Do I know WHY I chose this approach, or did I do it because everyone else does?"

"If I did my best impression of my teacher, what would THEY say the answer will be?"

"Do I know what I want to accomplish, and know that it takes my dedication to complete said task?"
