About Justice

I'm a recent economics graduate from the University of St. Andrews, and will be attending Oxford University in October 2019 to pursue a Master's degree in economics for development. I've done very well academically, and would love to share what I've learned with those looking to attend university in the near future or who are in university and looking to take the GRE.

My first experience with teaching was tennis. I used to teach people from 5 years old to 90 years old at a club on Martha's Vineyard. Since then, I've helped students at university for the last four years who struggled with their subjects, and have helped people prepare for GRE and SAT courses.

I've scored very highly on the GRE, SAT, SAT subject tests and AP exams. I've also recieved a number of awards at university for academic excellence, and graduated with a 1st, the highest possible UK degree classification. All this helped land me a place at Oxford.

Fostering good study habits was critical to my academic success. While at university, I worked one --and sometimes two-- part time jobs. Managing my time well was crucial, and by using all the study skills I learned over the years I was able to balance work and my studies. I'd like to share the skills that helped me succeed academically with others.

I started teaching tennis in high school, and also helped out my high school classmates with test prep and English. I did this in university as well, helping other students prepare for tests and come up with solutions to the parts of their modules they struggled with .

The key to learning is being able to explain something well by yourself. I always like to start by asking the student to explain the subject material or problem to me. If the student is struggling with the material, this usually helps me identify the knowledge gaps. I always believe in the student coming up with the solution on their own, so I like to periodically ask the student to explain it to me, so that I can see how they have progressed. Only as a last resort would I provide a student with a solution, or dictate information to them. Being fed an answer won't help the student develop the ability to tackle unfamiliar problems on their own, and coming up with a solution independently will help the student remember it better in the future. If learning something new, I'd like the student to try to learn it from source material, and use me as a sounding board to check their understanding.

I also believe in seeing things from the students point of view. Studying can be hard, and very boring if not a particular area of interest for the student. I often found myself studying many tedious subjects I had little interest in at university and in high school. I believe to help a student stay focused, you have to put yourself in the students shoes. If a subject is boring, let them know that they aren't crazy, have a laugh and move forward. This usually helps them approach the subject with less of a negative perspective, in my experience.

High school and college students.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
The most important thing is to ask questions. Its always best to come up with a solution on your own, as that way the material will stick in your memory the best, and you'll feel a sense of accomplishment. Still, sometimes material is not explained well to you, and it is better to come forward with questions. If you feel you've run into a brick wall, never hesitiate to ask.
