About Al

Hello Angeleno Students & Parents,

I taught in the New York State Department of Education System for 34 years. I retired from NY teaching in June of 2020, and now live in Los Angeles, where I now teach at a private school. I hold permanent NYSED Certification in French, Spanish, Italian and English Language Arts, and am awaiting my provisional California Credential. I taught ESL at Berlitz School of Languages for a few years, too.

I am rated by the State of NY, Department of Education as Highly Effective, and have been so since 1994. I have 100% passing rate among my students for all levels of language, and can say the same regarding my students who have trained with me for the NYS Seal of Biliteracy.

I am a polyglot. I have spoken Italian and English since language acquisition, and Spanish and French since age 12. I have lived in Puerto Rico and Spain, Paris, Nice, and on the Island of St. Barthelemy. Of course, I have lived at home in Italy and at home in America. I hold an ABD in Comparative Literature and Translation, an MA in Translation and Comparative Literature, an MAT in Spanish, and a BA in Italian Languages and Literature.

I am a professional actor and a proud member of SAG-AFTRA. I have trained at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Theater and at a few great studios in New York and Los Angeles with great directors of TV & Film and Voice over for the past 21 years. I can guide anyone on the way to find their true self as a performer and public speaker.

As a World Languages teacher of 37 years, I taught my students every possible platform for presenting material to an audience, live or via tech platforms. I taught them, most of all, the self-confidence principle. That's the key to your success: Believe that you CAN!

I will ensure your success as long as you work for it and subscribe honestly to my directives. I am here to enable you to perfect your abilities, to help you figure out what your instructors expect out of you, and to help you fulfill those expectations and grow.

About the lesson

The most important thing is to determine why they need the services. Do they wish to raise that 85 or 95 to 100? Well, then, such an admirable goal deserves some practice. Or, do they have a bit of trouble understanding their teacher or their material? Once, "the why" has been determined, we work on the "what" and the "how" so to proceed with a bespoke design for their specific needs to enable a self-confident and successful outcome.

I had the pleasure of working with Mr. DiRusso for several years during my time as a student in his Spanish LOTE course. This course helped me understand and learn a lot about the Spanish language, culture, and literature. Mr. DiRusso also acted as my mentor during the process of obtaining the New York State Seal of Biliteracy for Spanish, a very rigorous process. He went out of his way to teach me through an independent study during this process. His impact on me has led me to pursue the study of Spanish at a higher education level. Mr. DiRusso is the best language teacher I studied with.
