About Jonah

Hi, my name is Jonah Scher-Zagier. I am a physics PhD with a passion for learning and teaching! I mainly tutor in math and physics, but I also can help with writing, test preparation, and much more. I've tutored on Wyzant and as a freelancer.

I enjoy helping people solve problems and acquire new knowledge. Teaching lets me do both. Frecuently, the questions that students ask me lead me to investigate topics that I would not even have considered looking into on my own.

My first tutoring job was when I was about 15, when I helped one of my parents' friends prepare for the GRE, which I had recently taken myself. Since then, I have realized that I enjoy teaching nearly as much as learning, and a bit more than research. ;)

I have a PhD in physics from Washington University in Saint Louis, and I have been tutoring online for a year. I also tutored in person for several years before that. I also speak Spanish rather well.

When I start teaching a new student, I like to ask them questions to find out what they want to get out of the session. I also try to evaluate their learning style and the principal difficulties that they are having with the subject in order to maximize the potential of future lessons.

I have worked with a variety of students, with a diverse set of interests, backgrounds, and educational goals. I have primarily worked with high school and college students, as well as a few adults and middle-schoolers, and perhaps one or two elementary students. I have primarily taught students looking for help with physics and mathematics, or with exam preparation, but I have also taught writing and other skills.
In addition, although I do not have any specialized training and am likely not the best choice for students with exceptionalities, I have worked with some gifted students and a handful with learning disabilities.

When searching for a tutor, especially in an area such as physics, it is important to find someone who understands the subject and can convey that knowledge to you. However, it is also important to find a person with a positive attitude and a willingness to listen to students. A teacher who understands the subject, but makes students feel as if that knowledge is unattainable, can undermine the effectiveness of their teaching. Make sure the teacher's personality is a fit for you.

I saw a very cute cat! :) What can I say? I am a person of simple tastes.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I think students benefit from considering carefully what they want to get out tutoring, and ensuring that they communicate that information to their tutor. Will they want intensive lessons or a more relaxed approach? Do they have more difficulties with long, involved problems (such as homework) or recall-based tasks (such as exams)? What is their individual learning style? The tutor does not know what works best for you. Only you know that!

The price of my lessons depends on the amount of time necessary to prepare them, and thus on the difficulty of the material. For instance, a high school algebra lesson, which can be taught with relatively little preparation, will cost less than a college electrodynamics class, which would require more.
