About Kelly

I am an English teacher at Greenwich High School. The 2019-2020 school year will be my 5th year in the GPS system, but my 9th year teaching overall. I have worked with a variety of students who come from many different backgrounds. I am ready to meet each student’s goals because I recognize each student’s academic, personal, and emotional needs and strengths. I will work with your child on how to identify their writing and reading strengths as well as set goals for which your child can achieve in a personalized setting. During the process, your student and I will reflect on the learning process and your student will learn tips on how to be cognizant of their growth and areas of refinement. One of my goals as a teacher is to ready students for their post high school careers, whether that be a four year or two year college/university, community college, or the work force. The way to achieve this is through developing their “soft skills” that so many employers search for: learning how to effectively communicate for a given purpose. I have experience with middle school students and high school students. I currently teach 9th grade English and 10th grade AP Language and Composition. I look forward to working with your child in the future.

I acquired my Bachelor’s Degree in a English at Fairfield University in 2009 and my Master’s in Teaching and Foundations from Fairfiel University in 2011. I am currently taking online classes toward my 6th year. For two summers I learned under Renee Shea, author of the Language of Composition, at Fordham University. After my first year teaching the AP course, my students had the best overall scores for the Language and Composition exam in the school.

About the lesson

A typical process would include meeting a student and parent/guardian to establish what educational goals all parties want to accomplish. I would request that the student bring a copy of their transcript and recent samples of their English work and/or any test scores (if that student wants to improve SAT scores or AP scores). I would conduct an interview and invite all parties to engage in a short Q and A. At the initial meeting, I would ask students to write a short expository piece and to read aloud a passage to assess fluency and reading comprehension.
