About Christopher

I have taught and tutored writing and literature on every level from middle school to graduate school for over twenty-five years. After earning my BA in Renaissance Studies from Yale I completed my MA in English from Georgetown and PhD in medieval literature from the University of Rochester. Composition is my home base. I have worked with students in multiple disciplines as well as test prep and application essays.

My first teaching was freshman composition when I was in graduate school.

Yale: BA. Renaissance Studies

Geotgetown: MA, English

U of Rochester: PhD, English

Coursework in pedagogy and composition theory

About the lesson

I typically ask about the class the student wants help in to get a handle on assignments, expectations, etc. Next we look at the pressnt assignment and go through the strategies the student plans to employ. We discuss how effective those strategies have been and what changes could improve outcomes.

I have taught and tutored at elite research colleges, local and regional colleges, suburban and inner city community colleges, an elite girls prep school, an inner city Catholic boys school, and retired learners at our local adult school.

It is easy to find someone who has academic expertise. Look for someone who understands the specific strengths and challenges you bring to the table. Make sure the tutor keeps you on track and doesn't do your work for you.

My favorite part of teaching, at whatever level, is seeing a student move from not understanding to understanding. Most recently I worked with a student reading Lord of the Flies (not my favorite book). He made great connections to make a cogent argument on what the novel suggests about the nature of leadership.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
The student should consider expectations for his/her work and how classwork supports those expectations. In addition he/she should consider what strategies have worked or not worked in the past. Finally the student should consider how his/her background, interests, knowledge etc informs his/her work.
