About Catherine

As a former high school English teacher at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology and a professor at George Mason University, I understand the struggle students encounter writing essays. It's hard work. Once you gain the confidence to use the written word to express yourself, writing becomes an act of discovery. You not only learn about yourself when you voice your ideas, you enhance your readers' understanding of the world.

Working with students provides infinite hope for the future. The act of writing is often a process of discovery. So, as my students and I work together, they share their ideas, their life experiences, and their doubts. Through their writing, as well as through our teacher/student relationship, I am always impressed by my students great potential to make this world a better place.

I earned a Master's of Education and a Master's of Fine Art. I taught AP high school English at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology.

I am a writer with work published in The Saturday Evening Post.

About the lesson

During the pandemic, I am using Zoom and shared google docs to work with my students. I usually meet for an hour per session.

College Essay Writing: When I'm consulting with my high school students who are writing the college personal essay, I help them discover unique ways to express themselves so they can tell their story in a potent and memorable way. I also help them parse through their life experiences in order to offer insight about themselves that can't be found any where else in their college application. Additionally, I teach them how to write succinct essays for the short college essays.

High School and Middle School English Tutoring: When I work with high school and middle school students, I tailor my sessions to their school assignments so they can produce work that shows improvement and ultimately enhances their success in school.

I have worked with all ages. Some students need remedial help with their writing, others are honing their talents, and others have specific writing goals, such as the college essay, for which they need consulting.

I recommend you find a professional writer, such as myself, and one who has experience teaching AP English.

I am the Marketing Director for Fall for the Book, so I am particularly fond of our author events.
