About James

Hello Students!

My name is James Paul and I love writing, statistics and economics. Growing up in orange County, I have had access to incredible shools and teachers. However, at a young age I had little interest in learning what teachers taught. My grades refelcted this reality. However, through "gamificaton" and Pareto's principle (80/20 analysis) I was able to go from a 3.0 GPA freshman year of high school to a 4.8 GPA senior year. I never stayed up past 9:30pm to study and aced most of my tests (without being very smart). After drastically improving in high school, I ended up at the #1 public university (UC Berkeley). By focusing on working smarter (not necessarily harder) I was able to graduate from the Berkeley Economics Department with a 3.7 GPA at 20 years old. Through tutoring, I hope not to only help you achieve academic success, but I hope to teach you the fundamentals of working smart, not hard. I've experienced some incredible improvements by focusing on the right things and disregarding the rest. And, by tutoring you, I will do my best to help you reach your goals.

Tutoring is great for me because I enjoy seeing people improve. Currently, I work in the Affordable Housing industry and love the feeling of helping others succeed.

I have a BA in economics from UC Berkeley and have tutored fellow students for years.

About the lesson

My typical process for working with a new student is the following...

1. Phone call to discuss the scope of tutoring needed

2. In person meeting to further learn about students learning abilities and deficiencies along with first tutoring session

3. Feedback from student regarding effectiveness of tutoring and ways to improve

I have worked extensively with high school and college level students. Thus, these are primarily who I work with.

When hiring a tutor, there are many considerations. First, you want to ensure they are properly qualified to tutor (that they have adequate knowledge and training in the content area). Secondly, you want to ensure they know how to mentor and guide students along. Finally, you want to ensure that they are ultimately teaching the student HOW to learn, not just telling them what to do. This will pay dividends down the road.
