About Andrea

I currently work as an English tutor at Queensborough Community College with students pursuing their Associate Degrees. I am also a Peer Leader at this school and have experience motivating students to continue their enrollment and remain invested in their educational goals. My main priority, whether working with adults or children, is to help the student feel empowered as they are assisted with their work. I want them to gain feelings of confidence and competence and not be afraid to ask questions. Tutoring sessions with me would be a safe space particularly for students who are hesitant to get the help they need in the classroom. I, myself, am a straight-A student at my college, but I have ADHD. I am therefore open and eager to work with students who struggle with hyperactivity, focusing, or learning disabilities. I love language and want to share that with people who perhaps have not found such a passion or just want to sharpen their skills.

Aside from this, I tutor at my college, Queensborough Community College, and work for the College Discovery Program as a Peer Leader. These two roles have enabled me to truly understand the many factors that come into play with students struggling academically. I have a cumulative grade point average of 3.97/4.0 and I excel specifically in English and writing-intensive courses.

About the lesson

I would introduce myself and ask questions because I want students to feel comfortable with me as a person as learning with someone is a vulnerable thing. A first meeting would require me to be introduced to their coursework and we'd go over that together. After that first meeting and going over what the student is actively learning in their classes, I would go home and personally create practice examples for us to go over next time or find resources online that are relevant to their needs.

My background is primarily working with college students, but I hope to be able to work with elementary-high school students because I find children very bright and inspiring.

Details

Accessible education for all is one of my absolute greatest hopes for this world and so I try to keep my rates very reasonably priced. I let students and families decide their rates on a scale from $15.50-$24/hour. I appreciate sincerity as to what can be afforded, but English and teaching are my passions anyway, so if someone can benefit from that, it is rewarding enough regardless.
