About Brian

I grew up in a tiny cabin in Alaska without running water and escaped to Harvard College and Yale University--all by sharing my passion through writing. I help students find their voice and achieve their goals through clear, compelling writing.

I've taught college courses at Yale College, California State University San Marcos, and Los Angeles City College (including, at Yale, a Writing Intensive semester through the Bass Writing Program). Credentials include a PhD and MPhil from Yale University (American Studies), and an AB from Harvard College (American History and Literature). I also am a member of the Writers Guild of America West.

I love getting to the heart of things in any writing, fiction or non-fiction. If writers are invested in their journey they will take their reader along with them.

I started teaching professionally while a graduate student at Yale University, teaching sections of courses on American History and Film Studies, including a Writing Intensive section through the Bass Writing Program in Yale College.

About the lesson

We first identify the student's goal, then review a draft to find out what works, what doesn't, and why. The most important rule of writing is to have something to say, so I will help a writer at any stage find that something to say--and say it clearly and simply.

I have worked with teenagers and adults for whom English is a second language to advanced students in Yale College who just want to refine their writing skills.

I had great fun speaking on a panel for the Walt Disney Inclusion Summit in May, 2019, representing the Native American community in Hollywood. George Takei sat next to me and represented the Japanese American community.
