About Jonathan

My goal as an educational professional is to maximize a students growth by activating your child's background knowledge and creating an academic environment that allows them to apply that knowledge to any lesson. This requires building a trusting relationship between the parents and most importantly, the student.

I am a 7 year teacher. I am certified to teach in both NY and MD. My certifications are in Childhood Education (1-6) with a Middle School Extension (7-9) in Social Studies. I have extensive experience teaching English in both a large and small group setting. I am a former 5th Grade teacher of 4 years, where I taught at an International Baccalaureate (PYP), as well as 2 years as an 8th Grade SS/English teacher. I am currently a 6th Grade English teacher. During my 7 year career, I also obtained my MSEd in Curriculum and Instruction.

All of these experiences have given me the confidence and experience to provided a high quality and student-centered education.

There is no better feeling in the world than seeing a child light up and to see the changes in their confidence. There isn't any other job I can see myself doing. The students are always what makes this job especially rewarding.

I have my undergraduate degree in Childhood Education from SUNY Fredonia, where I received the Excellence in Student Teaching Award.

During my first 4 years as a 5th Grade IB/PYP teacher, I served in many leadership capacities, such as: 5th Grade Team Leader, PYP Lead Teacher and the Intermediate Team Leader.

During my time as an 8th Grade teacher I continued to pursue leadership opportunities, such as the 8th Social Studies Lead Teacher.

These experiences allowed me to work with teachers and administration to outline and provide highquality learning engagements that were contextually relevant to my students.

About the lesson

I like to learn more about my student's interests and passions. Taking the time to get to know them as people and then a student is paramount in a successful working relationship. From there, I like to determine what the academic, social, emotional goals of that student are. This all helps me understand how to properly activate a child's experiences, so that they may be more willing to take learning risks in our lessons.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should ask themselves if the teacher is someone they can trust. If you can't trust the teacher, it becomes much harder to advocate for their individual needs. My advice to students is to always advocate for their needs, whether it be repeating directions, changing seat location, or any of the wide variety of things that can help a student feel more confident with their learning.
