About Monique

Recent graduate from California State University, Northridge. BA in English with a Secondary Teaching Credential in the state of California. Ten+ years of experience tutoring and working with youth in various schools across Los Angeles. One of 16 awarded the Outstanding Student Teacher award for the 2019-2020 school year. Passionate about teaching and helping students reach their fullest potential. Encourages students to try their best, build on their strengths and recogize their weaknesses. Cultivates a safe classroom environment that fosters creativity and critical thinking.

Teaching truly is my passion. It is what I am meant to do in this world. There is nothing that makes me happier than being in the classroom and working with my students, helping them improve and grow as thinkers. I want the best for my students, I believe they deserve our very best, and I give my best always.

Teaching started for me as a child. Being the oldest of three in a single-parent household I carried a lot of responsibility. I aidied my mother tremendously when it came to my siblings in teaching them right from wrong, accountability, and how to navigate the world. Looking after my siblings and showing them how to do things for themselves led me to tutoring after school at my siblings' campuses and working in youth development programs in LA as I got older. I have never felt more in my element than when I am in the classroom teaching.

I have volunteered as a tutor since 2006. Starting with the elementary school I used to attend, up until 2013. Then, worked officially as a coach in afterschool programs in a variety of schools across Los Angeles County from 2013 to 2016. Student taught a 6th grade class at Sherman Oaks Center for Enriched Studies and an 11th grade class at Granada Hills Charter High School.

About the lesson

When working with new students, I have a "Getting to Know You" sheet that students fill out with basic info as a first step in the bonding process. With that, I am able to curate lesson plans centered around the student's needs and interests.

I have worked with a variety of students throughout my years working in schools. I have worked with at risk youth, students who have been incarcerated, youth in the foster system, students with IEP's and 504's, advanced students and students that know the material but need some motivation turning work in. I have loved teaching all my students and seeing them grow as individuals and learners.

When working with any teacher, make sure you are comfortable with them and able to ask queestions without fear. The teacher should be able to break down the information into understandable/digestable concepts and clearly outline expectations.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
The overall goal is for us as individuals to be able to think for ourselves using the skills we should be learning in school. When my students have questions I share with them to use the "two friend" rule. Meaning, before going to the teacher with your question, ask two other peers or friends in the class if they know the answer to your question/s. Odds are they will know the answer and may be able to explain better than the teacher can. If after asking two people, you are still unsure or confused, then is the time to bring your question to the teacher.
