About Xavier
My tutoring style prioritizes the relationship between the student and tutor above all else. I bring a sense of joy, excitement about any and all subject materials, and curiosity about the individual learning style of each student to every single tutoring session. I believe that students must be met from their respective starting places. I never enter a session with a predetermined expectation of knowledge. The goal of each tutoring session is to take the student beyond where they began.
I love the wonderful, difficult, satisfying process of learning. Entering each session with the ability to meet a student, develop a one-on-one connection with them, and take them to the next level, or to simply teach them a basic skill or principle, is a tremendous joy.
I also love the flexibility of tutoring. Working with different students on a variety of subjects keeps my brain activated and ready for anything.
My father is a high school teacher, and as a result, I have been exposed to a wide range of educational philosophies and methodologies since childhood. Throughout my first two years in college, I spent time working with kids through a summer arts camp and through volunteer opportunities, and really enjoyed my time teaching and connecting with younger kids interested and ready to learn. Now, I consider tutoring one of my favorite parts of my day-to-day!
I am a recent graduate of Brown University, where I studied History and Theatre Arts/Performance Studies. I have experience tutoring through the GoPeer Tutoring Start-Up in Providence, RI, where I worked from January 2018-May 2019. I have experience working with ages 5-18, both as a tutor and camp counselor. I have tutored a variety of subjects, from English to writing to History to test prep.

My typical process for working with a new student begins with the formation of a relationship. I always try to build a foundation of trust and mutual respect before anything else, using humor, compassion, and care at the start of lessons to break the ice between the student and tutor. From there, I remain flexible and open to using different methods to approach different students, in order to accomodate different problems and learning styles.
I have worked with students from ages 5-18, from a diverse range of backgrounds and interests. I have worked with soon-to-be college students on final papers, and young kids just starting to practice analytical writing.
I believe each student must look for a tutor who can match their energy. The key to a successful tutor-student relationship lies in the interpersonal connection between the two. If that is not present, no real learning can happen.
I recently re-connected with a personal mentor, a former high school teacher of mine. I hadn't seen or spoken to him in many months, and I was worried our dynamic, always positive and inspiring, might be frayed or damaged by our time out of contact.
On the contrary, seeing him and getting to spend a few hours together with him reminded me of the power of mentorship. He challenged me, listened to me, threw in bits and pieces of advice, and encouraged me.
This moment is indicative of something greater -- of the incredible power of human connection, especially through the lens of teaching.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Think about whether a teacher's way of approaching problems aligns with your own to see if they might make a good fit for you as a student. Also, I would recommend thinking about what you would like to get out of each tutoring session. Depending on what you need, you may want to use different methods of working or learning.
