About Malia

Hello all!

My name is Malia and I am a private tutor specializing in K-12 English and math as well as test prep (ACT and SAT).

A little more about me:

I am a recent graduate from Columbia University, where I received my B.A. in Psychology and graduated magna cum laude with a 4.0 GPA. I have 3 years of experience in private SAT and ACT tutoring and am extremely familiar with the test prep "game"-- I have helped students of varying abilities raise their scores by over 200 points. I have also worked in a K-12 school, where I taught English and math to students with learning disabilitites, so I am comofortable helping students of all levels! Finally, I currently work as a part-time teacher at GPS Academy, where I teach intensive SAT, ACT, and AP courses.

As a tutor, I believe that any student can be taught anything--it is just a matter of taking the right approach. I work on building relationships with my clients so I get to know their learning style (sometimes before they even know it), and help them use their skills to their advantage.

About the lesson

1 get-to-know-you session before we begin

I meet with the student in a casual environment and get a sense of their strenghts, weaknesses, likes, and dislikes about learning. We work on some initial problems so I can observe the students' process and provide some initial feedback before I design a plan for our future sessions.

Students with learning disabilities, high-level private school students, K-12 public school students

Look for a tutor that is willing to listen as much or more than they talk. Sessions should feel more like a conversation than a lecture.
