About Duncan

My love for literature first manifested in an insatiable need for additional volumes of a series of children's science and history textbooks called Eyewitness Books. I collected these compulsively, reading them over and over again to ensure that I absorbed every minor fact- as a result I am now an encyclopedia on surface knowledge pertaining to subjects from entymology to astronomy.

As I got older, I became more enamored with narrative literature, notably the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, Neil Gaiman, and Mike Mignola. However, it wasn't until my sophomore year of college that I understood that I could work with the literature I love professionally, to my relief and delight. Since then I have been studying poetic, thematic, and narrative analysis in regards to works such as Dante Alighieri's Divina Commedia, Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales, the works of John Donne, and James Joyce's Ulysses.

In addition to my work in theoretical and poetic analysis, I have studied the German language and its literature for 3 years at a college level, and have taken courses in Middle and Old English literature and translation.

My senior thesis was a theoretical narrative analysis of a trio of global epic traditions- the West African Epic of Sundiata, the Congolese Mwindo Epic, and the Icelandic Völsunga Saga, which earned me an honors grade and a place in the Medieval and Renaissance Studies Master's program at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland.

I would love to help with composition, analysis, or any other problems you might be struggling with, and if I can't make it fun, I will at least make it bearable.

The fact that it will allow me to travel extensively while plying my trade.

My thesis advisor told me I'd be a good teacher, and he's kind of my hero academically, so I took his advice and ran with it.

18 years of New York public schooling culminating in graduation with honors from Beacon High School '14, and a Bachelor of Arts from Reed College with a major in English and a completed senior thesis, as well as admission to the Medieval and Renaissance Studies M. Phil program at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland.
