About Bailey
I'm energetic and I love tailoring lessons to individual students' interests and needs. My lessons are always flexible and I would love to work with you to help you meet your goals! I have 4 years of experience running after-school programming (grades K-6) during which I tutored, assisted with homework, ran group study sessions, and taught STEM lessons. I also have 2 years of experience working as an elementary paraprofessional (1 year general education and 1 year special education) during which I provided 1-on-1 instructional support in classrooms and taught math and literacy intervention groups.
I am currently a teaching assistant at ACCEPT Collaborative and working on a Master's in Special Education. I love my job because I love working with students to meet their own personal goals. Academics can be challenging and at times very daunting for students. My goal is to meet each individual student where they are and help them learn one step at a time while minimizing their fears and frustrations of learning challenging tasks.

When working with a new student I typically just try to get to know them! I try to learn their personalities as well as strengths, weaknesses, and goals. For example: What motivates them? What are their academic goals? What topics or concepts are the most challenging for them? What strategies work best for them?
I have worked with many different types of students but primarily elementary and middle schoolers! I've worked with students significantly below grade level, at grade level, and significantly above grade level. I've worked with students that excel in one subject and struggle in another. I've also worked with students that have autism, ADD, ADHD, DMDD, claim they "hate" learning, have behavioral challenges, are visually impaired, are non-verbal, and/or are on IEPs.
Find a teacher that wants to work with you- not just talk at you.
For the last two years I have worked with a (now) sixth grade student. When I met him he was a fourth grader reading at a kindergarten level, only knew numbers 1-20, and had been removed from his math class because he was too far behind. As a result of all of this he hated school and rejected basically everthing about it, as well as developed several behavioral challenges to avoid the work. It took him about two months to even let me mention academics to him. But after that initial two months something changed. He started asking if he could "show me some things he knows" and we spent the next month talking about the very few numbers and letters he knew as well as all his favorite sports and interests. It wasn't until after that third month that he was open to learning. It was not an easy journey by any means, but I have never been more proud of a student in my life. The work was so challenging for him and at times very frustrating, but he stuck with it. We tried so many different strategies and learning methods and eventually we started to gain some traction. He is now a sixth grade student who has made incredible progress. He is reading at a third grade level and now has kindergarten "buddies" that he reads to and his math skills are at a fourth grade level.
While this student still has a long challenging academic journey ahead of him, he proved that with dedication and a lot of flexibility massive goals can be accomplished by taking it one day at a time.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Think about what your goals are. Think about what you want and need- not just what you think you're supposed to want.
