About Cristen

Hi! My name is Cristen. From the time I was young, I've always enjoyed reading and writing; I was rarely found without a book in my hand or writing in my journal. I have ten years of experience working as a teaching assistant and tutor at my church, with nonprofit organizations that are dedicated to assisting children who are English Language Learners, at a local elementary school that was near my university, and at the local library. When working with students, my goal is to support and encourage them so that they gain confidence in their skills and become lifelong learners.

For me, one of the most rewarding aspects of tutoring is working with a student to set goals and then helping him or her to achieve the goals. It is incredibly satisfying to watch students grow and succeed.

I attended The Masters School for high school and was enrolled in AP English Language and AP English Literature. While in high school, I also volunteered as a Sunday school teaching assistant and worked at Cabrini Immigrant Services in Dobbs Ferry.

I graduated from Brandeis University in May 2018 with a BA in Health: Science, Society, and Policy and International and Global Studies (double major). Throughout college, I volunteered as a teaching assistant in a local elementary school.

I am currently in graduate school at New York University's Silver School of Social Work and am pursuing a Master of Social Work. Although I am not receiving my degree in Education, I am passionate about helping students, and I have volunteered at my local library as a "reading buddy" ever since I returned from college.

I have experience working with students who have special needs, as well as students who are English Language Learners, individually and in small groups. While I have mainly worked with students ages 5-10, I am comfortable working with students of all ages and abilities.

About the lesson

When assisting students with reading, I ask them to read a few sentences and assess fluency, pronunciation, and comprehension. I always try to read books that students gravitate toward. Throughout our lessons, I will ask them questions about their thoughts to encourage critical thinking, visualization, inferencing and predictions, and development of vocabulary.

When I am assisting students with writing, I ask them to talk me through their ideas and collaborate with them to work to create an outline. I always include students in the editing process and discuss comments and suggestions.
