About Carolyn

I specialize in reading tutoring for young children up to 10 yrs old. I use the very effective Montessori method and implement this method with hands-on Montessori materials and educational games. Taught many children how to read, between the ages of 4 and 10 yrs old, over my 30+ years of classroom teaching. BA Education. AMS Montessori Certification.

The joy of the child when s/he figures out the "code" of what leads to reading and writing for the first time.

Studied education in college 1968-72

Earned money in college tutoring young children in reading

Taught in public school until my first child was born in 1973

Began working with Preschool aged children when I began to raise my own children and got my first Montessori training in 1980

Went on to work as a Montessori Primary level teacher over the years: Classroom Head Teacher, School Owner, Site Director, E.C.E. Instructor at Vocational College, and currently AMS Montessori teacher trainer with Fountainhead Montessori Adult Education Program

About the lesson

Introduce myself

Invite the student to play a challenging game

Introduce a reading/writing activity based on the Montessori sandpaper letters, intial sounds with objects, or the moveable alphabet, to evaluate the level of development in the child

Proceed with quickly-moving, fun, and engaging games with these Montessori materials, encouraging the child, and relying on the built-in self correcting quality of the activities to help the student feel successful

Step-by-step process building on each skill to move to the next level

Eventually, child can begin to read a beginning phonetic reader. I use the picture book, "Max" (the cat) that features short "a" three-letter phonetic words in very brief sentences on each page

We keep a record together as the child progresses through this series of early readers along with building words and then sentences with the Montessori moveable alphabet

I introduce "Parts of..." booklets for the child to create for her/himself that involves writing one word on each page and coloring in the correct "part" in the picture on the page (ex: "Parts of the frog")

Over the months, the child begins to write simple stories on story paper with space for drawing illustrations or adding stickers, and then reads them.

Over the months, the child reads more and more complex early readers that are sequential and skills-building
