About Michael

Writing is a skill. Skills can be honed and mastered with the right motivation, practice, and mentor. With my experience of nine years teaching (from middle school to young adults seeking to improve skills that'll enable them to be more independent), I know I can be that mentor.

Mastering the skills of writing opens up far more than I think we realize. There is nothing more satisfying than showing a student who thinks they're a horrible writer and that writing - whether it be an academic paper or a finally putting a story they've longed to share onto paper - is not only a skill they master but a skill they can enjoy. I've helped multiple students tap into this newfound skill and love; helping them achieve high marks on college essays, become storytellers through the written word, and grow in confidence with their communication skills.

Began my senior year taking an internship class where I shadowed my middle school science teacher. This was when I knew that I was going into education but wanted to explore the different subjects. From there I served a 2-year mission in the Philippines for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, teaching gospel subjects every day but also English for Filippinos who wanted to learn. Afterwards, I pursued my education at BYU-Idaho, earning a degree in English Education and have been teaching ever since.

I have a degree in English Education and have been teaching for nine years. I write my own stories as a hobby and self-publish them for my students' enjoyment.

About the lesson

I assess where they are at with a small writing sample and basic inquiry of their knowledge of an essay and then determine what their writing goals are. Once I have a starting point and an end goal, we map out together the best route to achieving it through mastering the basic fundamentals of a 5-paragraph essay.

I've worked all across the board...low income neighborhoods, prestigious charter schools, private institutions for young adults with neuro-diversities, and small-town Idaho schools.

I could be the best teacher in the world, but if you're not willing to work and push yourself, I can't teach you anything. Learning and growing - mastering these skills that will help you be successful in life - begins with the student. Be willing to take that risk of trying something new, different, or hard, and you'll end up surprising yourself.

Every year, without fail, there is always at least one student in my class who felt that they didn't have a voice or had the skills to write successfully. But after they go through my class, not only did they discover their voice, but their passion fro writing and storytelling. It happens every year!
