About Mimi

I am a high school graduate looking to help tutor any high school or middle school students with English. Writing is one of my passions, and I was lucky enough to have amazing English teachers who have taught me how to outline, structure, write, and edit both analytical and creative essays.

I'm available for online tutoring for essay-writing: from writing an outline to formatting paragraphs that flow, I can help you develop your voice.

I started tutoring two kids in my neighborhood my senior year of high school (see above).

One of the kids was a fifth-grader, and he initally struggled with literary analysis because organizing his thoughts seemed too overwhelming. However, after working with him for a few weeks, we developed a strategy that helped him organize his thoughts, and his approach to the writing process vastly improved.

The other kid I tutored was an eighth grade girl. I helped her mostly with science and algebra. Althose those aren't my areas of expertise, I found that she really just needed someone to help build her confidence in her thought process. We worked on study strategies, note-taking techniques/organization, and how to reach out to teachers for extra help.

I tutored two kids in my neighborhood during my senior year in high school, and I realized that helping them work through their thought process greatly improved how I interpret concepts and taught me how to relate them to others.

About the lesson

First, I like to identify areas of strengths and weaknesses by

a) talking to a student about where they feel comfortable and where they'd like to improve and

b) reading some of their past essays to evaluate what I think I can contribute to the learning process.

From there, I like to create a structured process or checklist for the student to go through while writing to help them get into the mindset of writing.

I think it's really important that you connect with your tutor on some level. English tutoring is not about having someone write your essays for you; it's about having someone help you develop your voice and put your thoughts onto paper. Make sure you're working with someone who truly understands that.
