About Laura

I am a certified English tutor and academic Japanese tutor with 30 years of experience teaching. I offer for-credit high school language classes and teach speaking, reading and writing to grades 4-12, college students and adults. I customize my classes to each person. I help my students overcome target areas of difficulty from grammar and writing to reading comprehension and speech. My ESL students become more fluent, improve pronunciation and prepare for tests. I love teaching and am dedicated to my students’ success.

Exchange Skype information and set up schedule and payment method. This can be done via text.

I have been teaching Japanese and English as a second language both in formal classes and one on one for over 30 years and have my BA in Japanese Language and Intercultural Communication from a Japanese bilingual university. I went to high school and college and lived and worked in Japan for many years. I also owned an English school in Japan and have worked in cross border bilingual finance for 25 years. With my business background I am uniquely qualified to teach both business Japanese and English and love teaching.

About the lesson

We will schedule an initial assessment lesson via message or email and text and discover the students goals, interests and favorite learning styles. If they have been studying the language or have experience we will determine their level and proficiency with some simple tests. We will go over scheduling and desired lesson place and style and set up a recurring plan that is flexible. I will then send them links and learning materials via email and provide them with all of my contact information and simple policies about payment and cancellation. We customize and chart the lesson course and track our progress making any adjustments needed. And we have fun!

I teach almost all levels both in English as a second language and academic Japanese. I specialize in ESL for adults, and particularly expats living here in the US as well as business English. I have many students in middle and high school who study with me to get credit for foreign language and prepare for academic tests. Many started studying Japanese because of their interest in anime, manga, cosplay, Japanese pop culture and music. Some of them have gone on to do an exchange year or live and work in Japan. I also have a number of adult business people whose careers involve doing business in Japan or with a Japanese company or colleague. I also work with college students preparing for Japanese proficiency tests or school and travel in Japan. My experience gives me insight into the common issues students encounter in learning Japanese and English as a second language. I have a bag of tips and tricks to help quickly overcome them.

Get a tutor who has experience and qualifications teaching language to second language learners. Just being a native speaker of a language does not make you a successful teacher. You must understand how the student functions in their own native language and how best to help them grasp and learn a new one often through e plantation in their own native language.

Perfect! We really enjoyed working with Laura. She worked with our kids as their summer tutor.

Although the kids didn't like me so much for making them go to a tutor, they did really like working with Laura. She tried to keep the sessions fun but effective.

She started by discussing our concerns, took writing samples to establish their baselines, and then developed a plan to work on their weak spots. She assisted the kids with their writing organization, vocabulary, and reading. But, I also liked that her approach included discussions to help them with the California state testing. She is very knowledgeable in all of the above areas.

As a summer tutor, the kids had a varied schedule. She really understood and worked to help accommodate schedule changes.

All in all, she did a great job and really helped the kids to prepare for the coming school year.

Kind, Patient and funny!
Laura is a fantastic tutor. She has built my lesson plan in a way that mostly comfortable for the way I learn and pushes me just a little from lesson to lesson. I've made much faster progress on Hiragana/Katakana, Vocabulary and commonly used phrases and structures that I've ever made before.
