About Brittany

For the last several months, I have been volunteering as a resident tutor for young women who attend the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India (although right now I am visiting the US for Christmas). I mostly tutor in conversational English as many of the women are not native speakers, but they have plans of going abroad and wish to communicate in English more clearly and to understand the American accent better. I also tutor them in writing and grammar. These are some of smartest students in India, but they still need someone to look over papers, letters, or even emails for correct punctuation and sentence phrasing.

Since I mainly tutor conversational English, this involves a lot of talking about random subjects. I usually separate the women into pairs or groups of three and give them a subject to discuss. The subject could be anything, either fun or serious, and I make them talk about it only in English. When they are speaking in their native language, they are very good at keeping the conversation flowing, but in English, many of them get nervous and freeze. They get stuck on a word or on how to phrase a question, so my goal is to make them not nervous. I tell them if they don't know which English word to use, then describe the word they are thinking of. If they aren't sure how to phrase a question or a sentence, say it anyway, in whatever way they can, and 95 percent of the time, the other person understand what they are trying to say anyway.

I definitely enjoy the unique experience that has allowed me to learn right alongside my students about their culture, education, and social lives. It's truly a privilege that these brilliant students come to me so I can help them improve and polish their English language and writing skills. I had forgotten how rewarding it was to watch students improve in something they had struggled with for a long time. Back in college, when I was getting my BA in English Literature from Mansfield University, I had tutored elementary students in reading and vocabulary with America Reads, America Counts and when I was with Big Brothers, Big Sisters, I often had to tutor my Little Sister in the subjects she struggled in. It was the same feeling then - a certain pride when you realize your student isn't stumbling over words so much while reading, or when they pass the spelling test that you helped them study for so long.

Honestly, I started tutoring because I was a bored American housewife living in India who felt like her education was going to waste.

I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature, so all I did for four years was write and proofread my papers. I also have extensive knowledge of classic literature (and that's always increasing because I'm reading constantly). I have a sort of crash course experience in teaching spoken English to non-native speakers. I, more or less, had to teach myself how to teach those students, but now I am fairly experienced in that as well. I had been volunteering to tutor conversational English at a university in India for several months, but I am now visiting the United States for a few months.

After introductions and giving some background on myself, I go over what the student's goals and expectations are, for both their work and mine. I then cover my expectations and goals for them. We try to establish exactly what the student is struggling with and why and then create a study plan based on that.

I've worked with elementary students, young teens, and college aged students.

Get someone who is going to help you apply the skills you learn in English to the rest of your life. Writing and proper grammar skills are obvious - those benefit everyone when trying to communicate through emails, letters, and research papers. But I know people roll their eyes when wondering what the benefits are of a close reading of "Frankenstein." Critical thinking is one of the most underestimated and under learned skills that a person can easily obtain from picking up a book, and it's a skill that benefit a person through his whole life.

In September, there was a big Hindu festival called Onam, and they have a huge meal, called the Onasadya, that they serve on that day. I sat with a small group of students when this meal was served, 14 different dishes on a banana leaf, and I made each student describe one of the dishes, what it was and how to prepare it, in English. One of the best and most delicious tutoring sessions ever.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What are you struggling with most, and why do you think that is? What would getting a tutor help you improve? Do you want to simply pass the class or get a good grade, or do you really want to learn the subject properly?
