About Steph

I have a special love and passion for English and language arts. I am a published writer who knows simple and powerful ways to communicate verbally and through the keyboard. I know the classics of literature and I also take my niece to metal concerts, so there should be ways that we can find some common ground and help make great strides in learning!

I love being there for the "OMG" moments, when someone realizes a way to do something, finds a way to shine on a test, a project or a paper, or just sees how brilliant they really are.

I actually helped fellow students in college way back in the 80's. When I was a graduate student, I worked with undergrads and found that very satisfying. I have also worked with adults in correctional settings and in the mental health system.

I have a Masters degree in Political Science and several degrees in sociology and linguistics. I have taken graduate coursework in lesson planning and formal education. I have been a tutor for a decade, and have instructed college students as well.

About the lesson

The first thing I want to do is meet the person with whom I will be working. I want to know what the student expects to get out of our journey together, what gifts they bring and what might challenge those aspirations. I want to involve the parents as much as possible, for support and continuity throughout this process, and to complete an honest and kind evaluation. I want to get to know the student so we can relate on terms that will make it easy to expand horizons and succeed.

I have worked with students that had major physical challenges to learning to college students with only an attitude problem standing in their way. I believe that we all have gifts, though, and I want to help bring those out in every student.

My standard price is 45.00 per session, unless there are material requirements or learning challenges that necessitate more frequent visits that do not last long. I believe in getting through objectives more than stopping because a second hand has reached the hour.
