About Greg
Hi, I'm Dr. Greg!
I have been teaching writing and critical thinking skills to college and college-bound students since 1997. I have a BA in philosophy from Reed College and a PhD in philosophy from UC, San Diego. I was a philosophy instructor at El Camino College, Rio Hondo College, and four different campuses in the Los Angeles Community College District. Previously I spent four years teaching philosophy at UC, San Diego and three years there teaching in the Humanities Writing Program. I have worked as a freelance tutor on and off over the last ten years. I am a published academic author.
My view is that clear and concise writing is the most important skill of the successful college student and that it is crucial for effective communication in business. I am experienced teaching writing in a variety of subjects and genres and in helping students prepare for tests such as the SAT, ACT, GRE, LSAT, SSAT/ISEE, and TOEFL. I have taught students of all ages, from a variety of backgrounds, and with various learning styles and levels of academic preparation. I am experienced in developing, implementing, and assessing IEPs.
I am skilled at making abstract material concrete and at motivating students to engage with material they may previously have found challenging. I am engaging, funny, and nurturing, as well as diligent, honest, and punctual. I do not waste your time or money.
