About Riley Grace
I started teaching and tutoring in writing and reading when I was in 6th grade. I have been tutoring various grade levels every year since 6th grade. I am now a first year law student.
I graduated with honors from the University of Washington in spring of 2020 with degree in English Literature. I currently am in my first year at the University of Washington School of Law. I have experience tutoring students in elementary, middle, high school and college. I have edited multiple college application essays and major-application essays with positive outcomes. I have also helped students with history, English, and other social study general or topical essays. I have experience with helping middle and high school students with poetry, non fiction, and fiction submissions to Scholastic Arts and Writing. I was also a national finalist throughout high school in Scholastic Arts and Writing, as well as a lead editor of high schoolers' submissions for Polyphony, an international high school literary magazine. The majority of my experience is based in developing and helping college and high school students write successful application essays, and I have done this in both formal and informal capacities. I also have in-school experience editing general writing by high school students at both Carlisle High School in Pennsylvania and Oak Harbor High School in Washington State. I have additional experience with literary tutoring in elementary schools through the Pipeline Program at the University of Washington.

When I start working with a new student, my first priority is to discuss the student's broader goals in seeking me as their tutor. I want to ensure I will be capable of helping them. I will then work with them to see how to best fit our time schedules together. I want to find out what time frame they are working within and create a schedule with them so that we can meet any due dates they are working with. I will then discuss any broad concerns they have about their work and we will create a plan to address these concerns. I will then ask them about and discuss any broader weaknesses involving their writing and project that they are concerned about. I will also be sure to ask the student what has not worked for them in the past, so that I can avoid any of those techniques and focus on what works best for them. Then, before we dive into the work, I will review some of my rules. My central rule as a tutor is that all writing must be the student's own work. I will guide the student and help them revise, but they must be the creator of the work. Once we dive into the work, we will focus on broader ideas first. What is making sense and what is not? What is the prompt the student is working with and does the writing address it? Once the concept of the writing is logical and meets the goal of the prompt or assignment, I will help the student fix the finer stylistic, grammatical, and syntacial elements. We will read through the writing multiple times and make sure the student and I are pleased with the final product.
I have worked with students ranging from third grade to senior year of university. I have also worked with students ranging in ability, from ones who are skillful writers looking for out of school opportunities who are submitting their writing competitively to with students who struggling to be at reading or writing grade-level.
I would advise them to look for someone who has experience in the area for which they are seeking help, as well as to trust their instincts about who they will work well with.
Recently I worked on a college application personal statement with a STEM-oriented student who was a competent writer, but filled his statement with facts and technical claims about himself, rather than being vulnerable or showing his personality as the prompt requested, and as is usually expected in a personal statement. We worked together to workshop more emotional and depth into the statements. After a few sessions of discussing his essay inspiration and what prompted it, as well as what about himself he wanted to convey in his essay that was not already visible in his resume or activity list, we were able to make the essay emotionally impactful. Seeing his and his parents' excitement of the revised essay, as well as later, him getting into his top choice school was extremely rewarding.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should think carefully about what their goals are. Do they want to get accepted into a particular college? Do they want to get into the major of their choice? Do they want to get an "A" on their assignment? Do they want to cut down on run-on sentences or improve their syntax? Students who are concerned about particular weaknesses or weak points on past assignments or work should feel welcome to voice these concerns to ensure we address them together.
