About Thomas

I am extremely passionate for the success and growth of young students in education, and in life. Every child has the ability to succeed, but each student needs an individual plan to achieve it. I have studied how to use multiple resources and approaches to ensure students achieve their potential.

I have five years experience working with students in schools. I have 10 years coaching children in sport, which have interchangable skills and qualities. Currently, I am about to enter my second year in teaching special needs students in the general education setting. My role is to aid students in using visuals, software, and organizers to help breakdown tasks into more managable approaches. I have a years experience working with students with autism in the Delaware Autism Program. Previously before moving to the US, I taught geography and PE in England for two years, and was a substitute teacher for one year.

- Received the Audrey Doberstein leadership in education award.

- Certified/Passed the praxis in special education teacher and Elementary education.

-Bsc in Sports performance and conditioning.

Truth be told, I never thought about teaching. But after taking my first job substitute teaching, I fell in love with the pride students had in themselves when they started to achieve and break barriers. Ever since I have tried to train and educate myself to be the best teacher I can be.

About the lesson

I like to get to know the student and do some fun yet engaging activities. Creating a good rapport and sharing interests really helps students to engage in activities they are asked to do. Ensuring that I build a level of trust is something I pry my teaching on.

General education students.

There is more than one way to achieve something. You do not have to follow one rule when there are multiple ways to achieve something. You will fail at times, we all do. But persevering and looking at a different approach is an important strategy.

I was extremely fond of receving my award in leadership. I was not expecting to receive the award but it was a huge honor to be called up on stage in front of my family and friends.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I remind my students to first of all breathe. Reread the question, look at notes, and grapple with the problem.

Using RACE (Restate and reread the question, answer all questions, cite evidence, and explain your thinking) is a great acronym to help focus students and prompt independent thinking.
