About James

Writing and academic tutoring that helps your long term working memory, so you REMEMBER what you learned and keep it your life long.

Web programming tutoring that takes away programming anxiety and teaches you "the zen of programming" so you blossom into a stable, reliable, steady programmer and web designer. 18+ years experience as a full-stack LAMP developer.

A new teaching method that improves on the Harvard Writing Lab technique; real results, glowing reviews.

I am very thankful for the way my students listen and learn. It pleases me greatly to be able to teach in a way that they carry with them what they learn for their whole lives, instead of just for the next exam or the next grade.

My first experience teaching was many deades ago when I taught English as a Second Language when I lived in Taiwan.

I have been teaching web development for two years.

I taught English as a Second Language in Taiwan when I lived there in highschool.  I quickly also became involved in leading reading clubs. Learning and teaching has always been a great passion of mine.  You will learn also from my infectious passion for learning; it is my goal to help you also to fall in love with learning and become a life-long learner.

I have a BA in English Literature and an MA in philosophy related to the mind and how our experience comes together, which is very much related to education.
I have been a full-stack web developer for 18 years.
I have been tutoring for five years, and a full-time online tutor for two years.

I discuss the student's learning challenges: strengths and successes, but also what is difficult. We see together if there are ways I can help the student working with the student's strengths to work through the challenges.  This occurs over the phone.  It helps if there is a description of the project the student is working on, along with a writing sample (might be previous) or a sample of the student's code.  This helps me evaluate strengths and weaknesses.

I have worked with students who are already high-achievers: serious, straight-A type students, students doing post-graduate research for a disseration or published journal article.

But I have also worked with students with rather heavy ADHD. I am especially appreciative of them. They are aware that they have problems focusing, and have no qualms in telling me what their real struggles are with learning. I give them gentle coaching for taking things step-by-step; they say my method decreases anxiety by a great deal, and helps them learn like they never have before.

For writing OR for web development, I would stress the following:

If you only want quick help on your homework, do not come to me or another tutor that you want to work with long-term, to really help you learn. Give that "quickie" stuff to a tutor that advertises help with homework.

When you are ready to really, seriously learn, help your tutor understand that. There are MANY students trying to get "quickie" tutoring that doesn't really help them learn much. If you make clear that you want a good, steady relationship with the tutor, that you aren't in it for quickie homework help, but rather want to emphasize what you learn long-term, a good tutor will listen to you differently, and take your learning more seriously. That tutor might not get you an A on today's assignment, but you will learn in a way that you can KEEP what you learn over time, and make real progress in your subject matter.

An ADHD web development student told me my way of teaching her helped take away her anxiety so she was able to perform at the very top of her class, finally getting A's and highly positive reactions from her professor and fellow students.  This is a great privilege; this is the kind of thing any educator worth his or her salt lives for.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What are my learning goals, and how long do I have to achieve them with tutoring?

How much time can I put into study and work on my subject outside of lessons, and how much of this do I want to be specifically guided in by the tutor?

Am I ready to learn this subject, or are there other things that I might need to brush up on - such as note-taking, so I can really remember what was taught during the session?

My services are not the cheapest, but students value my teaching because it helps them actually keep what they learn instead of forgetting it after the exam. I have a way of helping your long-term working memory which gets me great reviews with one of the big companies I work for, even though the students there pay MUCH more per hour than what you pay here.
