About Juna

I'm an expert in the fundamentals of writing and grammar for high school and college-aged education. I can tutor in college-application essay writing, SAT writing, 9th-12th grade writing and grammar, or college-level English work (explication, full research papers, etc.) I'm also knowledgable about history, ecology, philosophy, and women's studies, and I bring these diverse influences and knowledge-bases to my work in English. I'm a people-person who is comfortable meeting students where they are and supporting them as they work towards their educational goals.

I love building a rigorous and supportive space for my students to grow in. I believe learning is one of the most important and generative activities we can be a part of, and that education makes better people, better communities, and ultimately a better world. A respectful, professional, and positive teacher-student relationship is the cornerstone of all education, and it is a blessing and a challenge to be an educator. I love getting to know my students as people and as learners, and I love to see them change and be changed by the collaborative process of education.

I worked as a camp counselor throughout high school, and as an after school tutor for elementary and middle-schoolers while I was in college.

I have a BA in English Literature from Guilford College.

I've in education in some capacity for 6 years: At an after school program for elementary and middle schoolers, in an education program at a local urban farm, and at the Friends School of Baltimore, a private high school.

I like to begin by moving through a sort of questionare in the form of a conversation with new students. I am looking to get a sense of the student's history with the discipline, a sense of their realtionships with their current teachers and with school and homework in general, and eventually an understanding of areas where we need to encourage growth.

I've worked with elementary & middle-schoolers who were themselves or whose families were new immigrants to the U.S. I've worked with students at family shelters for unhoused people, I've worked with fellow college students, and I've worked with high-achieving high schoolers preparing to apply to Ivy League schools.

A good teacher is specific in their guidance, a good teacher listens actively to their student and makes them feel heard. A good teacher sets clear professional & academic boundaries. A good teacher builds a warm, supportive, and challenging space to learn.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
How do you feel about the subject you need help with?

What skills do you already have which you could use to learn about this subject?

What barriers to focusing exist in your life? Where does the energy to focus and work come from for you?

Can you think of a teacher you hated? What bugged you about them?

What about a teacher you liked? What about their teaching or personality worked for you?

What is your least favorite subject? Favorite subject? Why do you think that is?
